Day 5: Milk and Cereal Cocktail (Inspired by "Get Out")
By: The Film Bartender
Recent horror movies have contained many aspects of social commentary, and Jordan Peele's 2017 film, "Get Out", is perhaps one of the biggest examples of this. The unexpected horror movie from the comedy genius was a huge hit in theaters due to its portrayal of racist stereotypes in America, which inspires our drink for Day 5 of Bring Out the Boos 2022.
"Get Out" was written and directed by Jordan Peele, and stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Lil Rel Howery, Caleb Landry Jones, Catherine Keener, and Bradley Whitford. It was Peele's first attempt at writing and directing a film after receiving critical and commercial success as half of the comedy duo, Key and Peele. Due to his comedic background, it was really shocking and interesting to see this successful comedian release a horror film. However, it paid off as he received high praise from both critics and audiences, as well as earning an Oscar for his original screenplay.
The movie follows an African American man named Chris Washington, who starts to date a white woman named Rose Armitage. Everything is going very well, which prompts Rose to ask Chris to meet her parents at their huge estate. Chris reluctantly agrees, nervous about how her parents are going to perceive her dating a black man.
They travel to Rose's childhood home, where Chris meets her parents and odd brother. Everything is going fine at first, but there are odd and unexpected things happening at the house around him. What he doesn't know is that there is something sinister going on in Rose's family's household, and he doesn't know who to trust and who not to trust.
This movie may be classified in the horror genre and have thrilling elements, but also is able to contain comedic jokes and references that Peele is known for. Peele does a great job of implementing the horror elements with fantastic comedy to keep the movie light and airy at times. However, the way the characters deliver this dry humor is one of the best parts about this movie, especially by Howery, who is a highlight of this entire film.
Our drink today is inspired by the craziness of the Armitage family, especially their daughter, Rose. It is revealed toward the end of the movie that she will date African Americans to then bring them to her house and steal their bodies for older white men or women to inhabit as their original body is not functioning in their exact desire. After finding out that Rose is secretly evil and working with her family in their own selfish wishes, she shows her true colors, including the famous scene where she eats her Froot Loops by dipping them in a glass full of milk, instead of eating cereal the old fashioned way. This scene has garnered a lot of attention and has been turned into memes, saying that Chris should have never trusted her with the way she eats her Froot Loops.
Ingredients
- 4 scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream
- 1 Cup of Milk
- 1 1/2 oz Vodka
- Froot Loops
Directions:
1. Pour Froot Loops into a bowl and set aside. (The cereal part of this recipe is optional.)
2. In a milkshake mixer tin (this is what I used to make my milkshake, but the classic stirring with a spoon would work perfectly as well), add the four scoops of vanilla ice cream and 1 cup of milk.
3. Pour in the vodka to the glass or shaker tin, and blend everything together until fully blended.
4. Pour the milkshake out of the tin into a glass. Serve.
Film Facts: Jordan Peele said the title of the film is also a reference to what he often hears black audiences shout at the screen when watching horror films. Daniel Kaluuya was also given the lead role on the spot after nailing his audition. Peele said that Kaluuya did about five takes of the famous scene where his character needs to cry. He said the auction was so perfect as Kaluuya let a single tear down at the exact same time in every take.
Now you have made your very own boozy vanilla milkshake that is directly inspired from the modern classic horror film by Jordan Peele. This drink will definitely add a creepy and unsettling atmosphere to your next Halloween party or event, and give you an insight into what it is like to be a psychopathic "cereal" killer! (See what I did there!)
