Day 4: The Regan Special Cocktail (Inspired by "The Exorcist")
By: The Film Bartender
"The Exorcist" is probably one of the most famous and scariest horror movies that has ever been released. From its graphic depiction of an exorcism to the scene where Regan vomits all over the Priests, this movie has everything it needs to be a classic horror film. Our drink today, appropriately titled "The Regan Special", is an alcoholic representation of when Regan spews green vomit in one of the most infamous scenes in horror movie history.
"The Exorcist" is a 1973 horror film from director William Friedkin. It stars Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller, and Max von Sydow. The movie is one of the first major motion pictures that showed a demonic possession and an exorcism that followed. Because of that, the film shocked and terrified audiences all around the world, and had a major turn-out at the box offices. Moviegoers were lined up for blocks down from the theater all over the country to get a chance to see the movie that people were dubbing as the scariest film ever made.
The movie follows an actress, Chris MacNeil, and her daughter, Regan, as they adjust to their new home while her mother is shooting a movie. The young girl is also having to adjust to not having her dad in the picture as her parents are going through a very difficult divorce. That is not the worst of their problems, however, as the young girl is then possessed by an evil demon, which is hellbent on causing harm to both Regan and the people around her.
With nowhere to turn and not knowing what to do, Chris turns to the church to help them rid her daughter of this horrifying spirit. They send their two best priests to try and conjure this demon out of the young girl, which proves much easier said than done.
This film practically launched the careers of Burstyn and the other actors in this movie, as well as showing what can be accomplished on the screen in a horror movie. This is really the first glimpse audiences got of a possession and demonic entity in film, and it inspired numerous exorcism-based films that have came out in the future. It also gave filmmakers the freedom to get away with the gore and sickening qualities of their films that they may have not been able to do before.
Throughout the movie, Regan does some very haunting and sickening things, such as turning her head a complete 360° and stabbing her pelvic region with a crucifix. However, the most famous of those scenes is when she spews vomit all over the priests and the bed she is laying in, which both sickened and horrified audiences all around the world. Since it is such a famous horror movie moment, it is the inspiration for our terrifying drink today!
Ingredients:
- 1 oz Sour Apple Pucker Liqueur
- 1/2 oz of Simple Syrup
- 1/2 oz Whiskey
- 2 oz Sprite
- Ice
Instructions:
1. Fill a rocks glass with ice to the top, and add Sprite 2/3rds of the way.
2. Add Blue Curaçao and simple syrup, stirring them all together with a bar spoon.
3. Take a bar spoon and hold it over the glass, and pour the whiskey slowly and carefully over the drink for it to settle mostly on the top of the drink.
4. Serve.
Film Fact: The scene where Regan projectile vomits at Father Karras only required one take. The vomit was intended to hit actor Jason Miller in the chest, but the plastic tubing misfired, resulting in him getting hit in the face with the fake vomit. His reaction of shock and disgust while wiping away the vomit is genuine, and Miller admitted in an interview that he was very angered by this mistake while filming a crucial scene in the film.
