Day 3: REDRUM Cocktail (Inspired by "The Shining")

    "Come drink with us Danny". Be transported to the Overlook Hotel with this Halloween cocktail, "REDRUM". Inspired by the famous line from the classic Stanley Kubrick movie, this drink will be sure to get you into the Halloween spirit. 

    "The Shining" is a 1980 horror movie directed by Stanley Kubrick, based off the novel of the same name by iconic writer, Stephen King. The movie stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, and Scotsman Crothers. While it may be very different from the novel that it is based upon, the movie was well received and is considered a classic horror film, and still regarded as one of Stanley Kubrick's best films from his entire filmography. 

    The movie follows Jack Torrance, who is a teacher that is trying to find a job during the winter. He finds a position as the caretaker at the Overlook hotel for the winter, forcing him and his wife, Wendy, and their child, Danny, to stay inside the hotel all season. Everything is going perfectly fine, until Jack starts to see visions of the previous caretaker, who butchered his wife and children with an axe.

    When Jack starts to go crazy from cabin fever and the unholy forces placed upon the hotel, he poses a threat to both himself and his loved ones, especially his son. Danny has this special ability where he can see the past and the future, as well as correspond with those who have passed on. Because of this, he starts to see the demonic things that have happened throughout the hotel's history, changing the way the family sees things forever. 

    One of the most famous moments from the film is when Danny takes Wendy's red lipstick and write REDRUM on the door in their hotel room. When Wendy looks in the mirror, she sees what it says backwards, which completely changes the tone of the film around Danny's character. He then starts to mutter the word in a creepy, crackly voice for the rest of the film, which inspires our drink for today. 

Ingredients:

- 2 oz White Rum

- 2 oz Orange Juice

- 1 oz Grenadine

- 1/2 oz Triple Sec

- 1/2 Simple Syrup

- Sugar (for rimming)

- 1/2 Lemon (for rimming)

Instructions:

1. Cut a lemon in half, and use one half of the lemon to rub along the rim of a martini glass. Then, dip it in a plate of sugar to make a sugar rim on the glass. 

2. Add White Rum, Orange Juice, Grenadine, Triple Sec, and Simple Syrup to a cocktail shaker. Add ice, and shake vigorously until well mixed.

3. Strain the drink into the prepare martini glass. Serve. 

Film Fact: For the scene in the film in which Jack Nicholson breaks down the bathroom door, the props department built a door that could be very easily broken. However, Jack Nicholson had worked as a volunteer fire marshal and tore the door apart very easily. This forced the props department to build a much stronger door for the take. 

    Now you have made your very own REDRUM drink inspired off of the classic horror film, "The Shining".
